ISO 14064 GREENHOUSE GASES

WHAT IS THAT

The ISO 14064 standards have the main purpose of bringing credibility and guarantee (trust) to GHG reporting and monitoring processes , in relation to emission declarations by organizations and projects to reduce them.

ISO 14064 (adopted and published as a national standard UNI ISO 14064) is divided into three parts that can be used separately or as a useful set of integrated tools to meet the different needs in terms of declarations and verifications of greenhouse gas emissions:
  • UNI ISO 14064 – 1. Details the principles and requirements for planning, developing, managing and reporting GHG inventories at an organization level . It includes requirements for determining GHG emission boundaries, quantifying an organization's GHG emissions and removals, and identifying specific organization activities aimed at improving GHG management. Also detailed are management system requirements and guidance on GHG inventory quality management, reporting, internal audits and the organisation's responsibilities in verification activities
  • UNI ISO 14064 – 2. It concerns GHG projects specifically developed to reduce GHG emissions or increase their removal, such as interventions in renewable sources or carbon sequestration (to bury carbon dioxide at great depths or under the sea). Includes principles and requirements for establishing a common project baseline, monitoring, quantifying and reporting project performance against that baseline
  • UNI ISO 14064 – 3. Describes the actual validation or verification process . Specifies requirements for components such as audit planning, audit procedures and evaluation of GHG assertions. So ISO 14064-3 can be used by organizations or independent third parties to validate or verify GHG reporting and claims

KEY POINTS

UNI ISO 14064 is a standard made up of three parts which aim to define the best international practices in the management, reporting and verification of data and information relating to GHGs (GHG -Greenhouse gases, greenhouse gases) .

The standard is useful for planning and managing GHG inventories at organization level (1st part), projects to reduce emissions/increase removals (2nd part) and to give the requirements and principles for the work of those bodies that carry out verification and validation activities of the declared data (3rd part).

In essence, the standardization of approaches (until the publication of the ISO standard there were indeed many and varied) for accounting and verifying emissions data should ensure that, for example, a ton of CO2 is always the same, wherever it is found.

ADVANTAGES

  • Promotes consistency, transparency and credibility in emissions counting and at the same time promotes emissions surveillance , audits and reporting
  • allows companies to identify and manage the risks and responsibilities associated with harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • facilitates the marketing of permits and emission credits
  • favors the planning, development and application of initiatives and programs aimed at reducing pollutants
