Fifteen municipalities in Valsassina have obtained the Pefc Certification , an international recognition for sustainable forest management. The Mountain Community of Valsassina, first in Lombardy, received the certificate during the conference “Chestnut growing as a safeguard for a territory”, funded by the Pnrr with 3.6 million euros. It was delivered by Davide Troncon, quality manager of CSQA , the body that carried out the checks.
As explained by the designer Lorenzo Guerci, the Pefc certifies "the sustainable and correct management of the 7,617 hectares of the municipalities involved, or 35% of the valley's wooded area, in compliance with the standards dictated by a supply chain of forest products". The certification also extends to ecosystem services, such as carbon fixation (one credit is worth 12 euros), sustainability (22 euros per credit) and protection from hydrogeological instability.
