The consolidated law regulating the sectors of wines, spirit drinks and agricultural products with Geographical Indication, published in the European Official Journal GUUEL of 04/23/2024 , strengthens the role of protection consortia by providing more effective tools for competitive development and sustainability of the quality production sector.

The objectives are to strengthen the legislative framework of the Geographical Indications System, improve sustainable integration into European quality policy and strengthen the position of GI producers in the food supply chain.

From today therefore stop the registration of traditional terms which are identical or which recall the names of PDO and PGI , as in the case of Prosek, the Croatian wine which evokes the Italian Prosecco PDO or of balsamic and Cypriot vinegar, it will be mandatory to indicate the name of the producer on the the label of a PDO or PGI, and measures to protect Geographical Indications online and empower producers by simplifying the GI registration process.

The regulation is awaiting implementation at national level for the provisions that require it and the adoption of secondary legislation (implementing acts and delegated acts) which should arrive in January 2025. (Source: https://www.qualivita.it/ )
