The Ministry of Health publishes the second revision of the Guidelines on the prudent use of antibiotics in pig farming , developed with the aim of promoting an increasingly responsible use of antibiotics in this sector.

The document is the result of an in-depth updating work conducted by a multidisciplinary group composed of representatives of the competent authorities at central, regional and local level, Experimental Zooprophylactic Institutes, universities, and freelance veterinarians.

The review takes into account the most recent European and national regulatory provisions, as well as new scientific updates.

The Guidelines have been shared and approved by the Italian Society of Swine Pathology and Breeding (SIPAS).
They are intended as a non-binding tool , useful for sharing the problems posed by antibiotic resistance between veterinarians working in the primary production sector and those employed in public institutions, with a view to collaboration and constant comparison between competent authorities, operators and professionals, regarding the reasoned and appropriate choices of animal treatment, respecting animal health, public health and the environment, according to the One Health principle.

The Guidelines are part of the broader veterinary strategy to combat antibiotic resistance, included in the PNCAR 2022-2025 , and in particular represent the indicator of Action 1.2 of Objective 1 of the theme "Prudent use of antibiotics in the veterinary field".
