The Presidency of the Council of Ministers sent the new National Antibiotic-Resistance Plan for the three-year period 2022-2025 to the Ministry of Health and the Regions. The objective of the plan is to provide guidelines and operational indications for the management and contrast of the development and spread of antibiotic resistance (ABR).
The document follows an integrated approach (One Health) which includes the collaboration of all the sectors involved: from human health to animal health and the environment. It provides that "Training", "Information, communication and transparency", "Research, innovation and bioethics" and "National and international cooperation are the 4 horizontal areas that support the entire plan which is divided into three parts:
The main strategic objectives, based on the experience gained with the PNCAR 2017-2020, on the experiences of other countries and on European and international recommendations, are the following:

- National strategy which lists the figures involved, the thematic areas and the general objectives to be achieved at the Italian level;
- National plan, intended for operators in the sector, which indicates the specific objectives for each thematic area;
- Descriptive appendix of antimicrobial resistance in fungi, viruses and parasites.
The main strategic objectives, based on the experience gained with the PNCAR 2017-2020, on the experiences of other countries and on European and international recommendations, are the following:
- strengthening of the one health approach (ABR coordinated surveillance and use of antibiotics, prevention of environmental resistance);
- strengthening the prevention and surveillance of healthcare associated infections (HAI) in the hospital and community;
- promotion of the appropriate use of antibiotics and research for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of resistant infections;
- strengthening national and international cooperation;
