The European Commission has adopted the 2021-27 program of the EMFA, the European Fund for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture for Italy. The total amount is 987.2 million euros for the next six years, of which 518.2 million euros from the EU budget.

Half of the funds are earmarked for sustainable fishing to end discards of unwanted catches, reduce overcapacity in some fleets and improve monitoring and data collection on fishing activities.

More than a third of the funds are dedicated to sustainable aquaculture and processing and marketing: the remaining funds will be dedicated to the sustainable blue economy and strengthening international ocean governance.

"The program will support the protection and restoration of biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems in Italy - said the EU Commissioner for the Environment and Oceans, Virginijus Sinkevicius -. It will also promote sustainable aquaculture and processing activities, as well as the strengthening of the aquaculture and fisheries sector, including the processing of fish products".
