For the first time, a study of over 900 pages, contextually analyses three fundamental elements necessary to define a sustainability strategy for a Geographical Indication:
-
Production Process Analysis and IG Management
-
European and National Regulatory Analysis
-
Certification Schemes Analysis
In addition, a survey was conducted on the Protection Consortia to gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing initiatives on sustainability issues and development priorities.
1. ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTION PROCESSES AND IG MANAGEMENT
This section presents the documentary analysis of the production specifications, control plans and statutes of the Protection Consortia, referring to the production processes of a representative sample of 30 Italian PDO and PGI products.
This analysis allowed us to associate the SSGI indicators foreseen by the FAO-oriGIn study with each product.
Furthermore, the strengths of the Geographical Indications and the possible areas for improvement have been identified, based on the results of the indicators detected.
2. EUROPEAN AND NATIONAL REGULATORY ANALYSIS
It analyses the regulations related to EU directives and regulations together with the Italian legislative provisions, highlighting the connections with the topic of sustainability.
The analysis focuses on the European Commission guidelines, with particular attention to the transition of the agri-food system, and then focuses on Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 which introduces specific provisions regarding the economic, environmental, social and animal welfare sustainability of GIs.
3. ANALYSIS OF CERTIFICATION SCHEMES
The section presents the results of the monitoring carried out on the main certification tools dedicated to sustainability in the agri-food sector.
The aim is to provide a guide to improve the knowledge and skills of the Protection Consortia and companies in the GI supply chains on the certification tools available to support sustainability.
Furthermore, useful indications are offered to make more informed assessments and choices, promoting an effective application of these tools.
4. INVESTIGATION ON PROTECTION CONSORTIA
The section reports the results of a direct survey carried out on the Consortia for the protection of the PDO PGI agri-food sector, with the aim of providing a snapshot of the current presence and perception of the theme of sustainability within the Consortia and evaluating the actions implemented in the supply chain, identifying the main objectives of the Italian Geographical Indications sector in the field of sustainability, the difficulties encountered, the projects planned in the supply chains in the environmental, economic and social pillars.
